Following the destruction of Tropicana Field’s existing roof system during Hurricane Milton, the City of St. Petersburg initiated a fast-track replacement effort to restore one of Major League Baseball’s most recognizable venues. The project required the rapid delivery and installation of a new large-scale tensile membrane roof system under demanding logistical and scheduling constraints.

ETS was engaged to install a new PTFE membrane roof spanning more than 345,000 square feet. The replacement system consists of exceptionally large individual panels, each approximately 14,400 square feet, making them among the largest panels ETS has installed to date. The scale of these panels, combined with the geometry of the existing structure, required careful coordination and precise execution throughout installation.

The roof utilizes Serge Ferrari GF 7000 PTFE membrane, selected for its durability and flexibility. The material was sourced internationally, manufactured in Germany, and fabricated into panels in China before delivery on site.

With site access and equipment constraints, traditional lifting methods were not feasible. Instead, ETS implemented a specialized installation strategy that eliminated the need for manlifts. Each panel was carefully winched into position from the ring beam, a method that required detailed sequencing, coordination, and control to safely maneuver and tension panels of this size.

As a re-clad project, the work demanded not only technical precision but also adaptability –integrating new materials and installation techniques within the framework of an existing structure under urgent timelines. The result is a fully restored tensile roof system that reinforces Tropicana Field’s long-standing presence while demonstrating the resilience and efficiency of modern membrane construction.
