As part of the transformative South Central Light Rail Extension of Phoenix’s Valley Metro light rail system, ETS proudly designed, engineered, and installed the tensile canopy structures at 8 stations. Crafted from durable PTFE fabric membranes supported by sleek AESS steel frames, the canopies provide essential shade and comfort for passengers while creating a complementary architectural profile. PTFE, renowned for its exceptional durability and solar reflectivity, ensures the canopies can withstand the harsh sun, high temperatures, and occasional monsoon storms while requiring minimal maintenance.
The construction and installation process demanded meticulous planning and precision, particularly given the tight urban footprint. ETS collaborated closely with general contractor Kiewit and architect-engineer, DWL Architects and AECOM, to integrate the tensile structures into the design of the stations. Using advanced installation methods such as 3D modeling for QA/QC, coordinating erection around finished public art, and having minimal connection points for quick installation, ETS delivered a solution that met functional and aesthetic goals.
Beyond their functionality, these canopies are key in creating a welcoming transit environment, reducing heat stress, and enhancing the commuter experience. ETS is honored to have contributed to this milestone project, which blends innovative design with practical solutions for urban mobility.
