Originally conceived by famed tensile architecture engineer and designer Horst Berger, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion opened in 1990 with 3,000 reserved seats. Following extensive damage from Hurricane Ike, the amphitheater was renovated and expanded to include a new canopy that more than doubles the pavilion’s covered seating capacity. The design maintains the original peaked profile tensile membrane structure supported by a series of steel truss masts, with cables and membrane upgraded for higher wind loads. Additionally, the existing steel elements were strengthened to resist hurricane-force winds.
The PTFE membrane also allows for the projection of images and colored lights for a more impactful experience for concert goers.
In 2017, ETS returned to design, engineer and install two new PTFE tensile membrane canopies at the amphitheater’s north and south entrances. Each spans 144 feet by 56 feet for a total fabric surface area of 4,840 square feet.
“We opened our doors to two sell-out events in May 2009, which would not have been possible without ETS’ commitment and dedication.” Jeff Young, Vice President of Operations for the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
