Returning NRG Stadium to Operation

A 125,000-square-foot multi-purpose venue, NRG Stadium is home to the NFL’s Houston Texans and Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Designed to be an open-air replacement of the neighboring Astrodome, it features a retractable roof wrapped in a translucent fabric that, when closed for inclement weather, ushers in natural light and dampens sound transmission. It was the first NFL stadium with a retractable roof and the largest operable roof in the United States when it opened in 2002. In subsequent decades the venue has hosted two Super Bowls, numerous NCAA tournament games, and frequent concerts and events.

On July 8, 2024, Category 5 Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Houston, causing severe flood and wind damage throughout the city. NRG Stadium’s roof suffered damage in two areas, one fixed section and one retractable section, comprised of four fabric panels. Arrangements to secure the damaged structure and identify temporary replacement solutions began the following day. ETS working alongside structural engineer Walter P Moore to develop a phased renovation sequence including an existing conditions assessment, design and fabrication of replacement roof panels, and their successful installation.

During phase one, ETS accessed the stadium’s roof structure, removed damaged fabric, and installed rigging to secure the roof’s existing cable system. Phase two fast tracked design and fabrication of the four interim roof panels, with the team working to identify readily available cladding materials and develop modified attachment methods. System details were finalized within three weeks, proceeded by ETS procuring PVC membrane, fabricating 25,058 square feet of roof panel assemblies, and shipping them to the project site within two weeks. Over the next month, ETS installed two steel support beams, four temporary replacement roof panels (including secondary support provisions), an assortment of hardware, and reinstalled walk strips over mechanical connections and fabric closures to complete phase three. Renovations required extensive coordination with the Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation — the organization responsible for managing and operating the venue — to keep the stadium fully operational throughout construction. To do so, ETS field crews worked seven days a week until renovations were completed.
