FabriTec has begun construction on the new Minnesota United Soccer Stadium, also known as Allianz Field. The Allianz Field is going to be a state-of-the-art soccer stadium located in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
When the stadium was proposed, the design team knew it had to be the stage for world-class soccer games and events. One of the notable qualities that were proposed is the innovative façade that FabriTec Structures has been contracted to design, engineer and install.
Debuting new PFTE material
What makes the façade an exceptional feature is the highly engineered PTFE membrane that will be utilized, a translucent membrane.
“This is the unveiling of the product on this stadium,” said Bill Schmidt, FabriTec’s project manager on Allianz Field. “[FabriTec] is constantly striving to be at the cutting edge, and this new material helps us get there”.
The new mesh material will also have a silver tint, giving it a stunning nearly-metallic appearance when reflecting the sun’s light. This elegant membrane is both unique and aesthetically pleasing; drawing attention to the fascinating shape of the exterior cladding.
The contemporary shape of façade
The façade on the Allianz Field is expected to be its defining characteristic not only for its shiny, see-through appearance but also for its contemporary, geometric shape. Schmidt described the material’s exceptional capabilities as the reason for choosing the unusual PTFE fabric.
“It allowed the architect to give the exterior some shape,” said Schmidt. “The building has some unique concave shapes and geometry. And the fabric is best suited to accommodate those challenges above other products, like metal.”
The project is due to be completed in 2019 and is one of a hand full of stadium projects FabriTec will be taking on this year. The company has already announced the work they are doing at the Dallas FC Stadium, which includes the manufacturing of an inventive scarf-like canopy. FabriTec will also be announcing another major stadium project they have in the works soon.
