FabriTec Structures has completed the monumental tapestry structure at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial in Washington, D.C. The 450-foot long, 80-foot-high structure features a unique cable-supported mesh screen, depicting the peacetime coastline of the cliffs of Normandy.
Designed by architect Frank Gehry, the massive structure, located on Independence Avenue in Washington D.C., is the backdrop of the 4-acre memorial to the 34th President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower. The tapestry includes 600 translucent fabric panels, allowing both natural sunlight during the day and artificial light at night to give depth to the design of the structure. Anywhere from 50 pounds to 125 pounds of steel are welded in layers to the panels, bringing to life the Normandy shores Eisenhower fought for as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II.
The memorial, which also includes bronze statues and carved quotations from the former President, was scheduled to open on May 8, 2020, the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, commemorating the day Germany unconditionally surrendered in World War II. Due to the coronavirus, the memorial dedication ceremony has been rescheduled to Thursday, September 17, 2020.
